25 YEARS AGO WE STARTED SOMETHING BIG

The story

25 years ago, we started something big...

…bigger than we could have ever imagined. But it all started with something very small – or in our case – something that didn’t exist at all. Not physically anyway. On September the first 1993, our Autonomous System, AS1299, was born.

We didn’t realize it at the time, but this would be the start of an amazing journey. One that would take us through towns, cities, countries and continents. Into the soil and under the sea, in an endless tug-of-war with ships’ anchors, diggers, cable sharks and even squirrels.

As we grew, so did the Internet. Bit by bit, we laid the foundations for social networks and the online gaming universe. We streamed the soundtrack of a generation and made some incredible clouds. Shift happened – and we were right in front of it.

As one of the last surviving Internet backbones from the original few, we’re proud and humble to be turning 25. And while we might be older than most of the apps, content and services we carry, we’ve never grown up. We still have the curiosity, energy and confidence of a start-up. Because there’s still so much to challenge. So many big ideas to carry. We’re already looking ahead to the next 25 years. Because our job’s not done. Not until geography – is history.

KEEP THEM SEPARATED

When it comes to connectivity, you can never have too much certainty. Which is why we developed our red and blue networks.

This strict separation of two geographically diverse networks delivers 99.999% reliability. And as both the red and blue networks have similar delay performance, delivery doesn’t suffer if one of them goes down. In contrast to most carriers, we have a high level of PoP diversity. All international gateway PoPs and heavily trafficked cities have a minimum of two identical PoPs, at two different locations, to guarantee performance.

DIVERSITY BY DESIGN

Crossings in the network are, in practice, unavoidable. But we are constantly rebuilding our network to minimize the risks.

Where red-blue can’t be applied, documented standards – aimed at resilience by design – allow for meshing and ring concepts.

Further, we try to double everything that’s feasible, including power, so if something happens it won’t affect our customers. And we are always on the lookout for new ways to improve our entire system.
